How & when did you first learn about Summer, and what drew you to the business model?

I was introduced to Summer originally by Becki Choi, our Head of Product Design, since we’d worked together at my last company. This was around early 2022, and when she first explained the idea to me, my impression was definitely something along the lines of 'wow, this seems too good to be true.' After learning more, though, I was drawn to the experience of it all from the members’ point of view. Having flexibility in the ownership model combined with all the added value Summer provides with design, maintenance, handling of short-term rentals, and more is extremely compelling.

Where were you before joining the Summer team?

Before Summer, I was working at a health-tech startup in Boston called Buoy Health. I was there for about 2 years in total. I worked on a number of different projects there, but the big one was a tool to help people figure out what was wrong with them and to point them to the right care.

In 3 words, how would you describe the Summer brand?

Genuine. Warm. Artistic.

As our Senior Software Engineer, how would you describe your day-to-day?

In short: lots of time in front of the computer! Really though, it’s been a nice mix of heads-down, solo coding work, and collaboration with the rest of the team. Typically, mornings are the more collaborative part of my day, with our team meeting to all sync up and then smaller meetings or working sessions for specific tasks. Afternoons are usually spent digging deeper into whatever development tasks I happen to be working on for the day or doing some research for a big project in the pipeline. A fun thing about being at a smaller company is there’s always a new thing to learn and I get a lot of variety in my work.

"One of the impressions that I got when deciding to join Summer was that it was very design-minded, which makes me very happy as a front-end developer!"
You’ve been working closely alongside the design team on the launch of the Summer member mobile app. What has that process entailed so far?

It’s been great! Most of my experience is working on user interfaces, so I always love close work with designers. We also have a small team still, with just 4 developers and 2 designers, so it’s easy to huddle up quickly to hash out a screen or user flow. One of the impressions that I got when deciding to join Summer was that it was very design-minded, which makes me very happy as a front-end developer!

How do you view the relationship between the Summer model and tech?

I think something that resonated with me during my interview process was the way Alex, our Head of Engineering, put the relationship. He said that our business was mostly about people-to-people interactions, with technology there to empower our team, and I agree with that 100%. We have great people, and I love that our members get to see that and have that personal touch. Any way that our tech can remove roadblocks for our team to let them work their magic is a win in my eyes.

What do you see for the future of Summer?

I’m very optimistic about Summer's future! I think with the foundation we have now, and our great track record of member happiness, we can become the first name on people’s minds when they’re thinking about second-home ownership.
